One of the major benefits of taking an apprenticeship in Leadership and Management is that you will learn skills that can be useful in a wide variety of careers.
Not only will an apprenticeship widen your career prospects, but it will also allow you to earn while you learn, gaining useful practical skills in the workplace at the same time as you study.
How is this apprenticeship funded?
The government’s Apprenticeship Levy, which came into force in April 2017 (read more in our blog: The Apprenticeship Levy – what is it?), changed how apprenticeships are funded. It made employers responsible for paying a levy that helps to support apprentices, with a contribution based on the size of their payroll.
The Levy was set up to encourage employers to hire apprentices – otherwise their contribution goes into a central pot for others to use.
The government continues to fund either part of or the full costs of apprenticeships, depending on the size of the company and the age of the apprentice being taken on.
Who is eligible for this apprenticeship?
School leavers, college students and even those holding a university degree can now apply for an apprenticeship, providing the training allows them to develop substantial new skills.
Those already in work can also apply. Apprentices might be new to a company, with the option of applying for a job once their apprenticeship has been completed. Alternatively, they might be an existing member of staff who wishes to upskill to open up their career options moving forward.
Even senior members of staff can take on an apprenticeship in Leadership and Management providing they hold qualifications in subjects unrelated to management.
What resources and support are available to apprentices?
Choosing the right training provider is all important (find out more in our blog: Are all apprenticeship providers the same?). At CMS, our focus is on providing high-quality training and support that benefits apprentice and employer alike.
Because we recognise that no two learners are the same, we place a range of teaching tools and methods at their disposal. These include classroom and online learning, such as the use of webinar support.
Apprentices also have access to ManagementDirect, an online library created by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This provides a wide array of resources, including e-learning modules and published articles, so that learners can develop the knowledge and understanding to apply their newly learnt skills to their role at work.
Finally, apprentices are given one-on-one support from our experienced and fully qualified tutors, who schedule regular visits to offer advice and encouragement while monitoring progress. Examples of Apprenticeships in Leadership and Management
Both of the following roles involve managing projects and /or teams. This could be in any size of organisation in the public, private or third sector.
Example 1: Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor
Length of apprenticeship: 12 – 18 months.
Role includes: delivering operational plans, managing projects, supporting and developing team members, including monitoring workloads, problem solving and relationship building.
Job titles: Team Leader, Supervisor, Shift Manager/Supervisor, Foreperson.
Skills: interpersonal and communication skills to lead and manage people; operational, project and financial management skills; time management, problem solving and decision making skills.
Example 2: Level 5 Operations / Departmental Manager
Length of apprenticeship: 2½ years.
Role includes: creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects and teams, coaching and mentoring, change management, finance and resource management.
Job titles: Operations Manager, Departmental Manager, Regional manager, Divisional Manager.
Skills: operational and project management, including business development and planning; setting KPIs and delivering objectives; change management; budget management, including forecasting; communication and interpersonal skills; managing multiple teams and team leaders; collaborative working; recruitment and people development; negotiation and networking skills; time management, problem solving and decision making skills; resource management; resilience and accountability.
