Outstanding Learner Success Awards
Philippa was 17 when she started at CMS Vocational Training and her ambition at the start of the programme was to become a florist. Philippa has a hearing impairment and a statement of SENs and when Philippa came to CMS she had low self confidence and self esteem, struggled to make friends and had never travelled independently. After a few weeks on the FL programme the change in Philippa was evident, she began catching the bus on her own, had made friendships with other learners and had grown in confidence. By the end of the programme Philippa had developed into a confident young lady who was determined to achieve her goal of becoming a florist. Philippa had to undergo an operation to help correct her hearing whilst on the programme which proved challenging for her but she did not let this get in the way of achieving her goals and it was very rewarding to see how strong and determined Philippa grew through the FL programme.
Whilst at CMS Philippa achieved her Level 2 Customer Service, Level 1 Retail Knowledge and a Level 1 Diploma in Employability and Personal Development. Philippa still keeps in touch with me and calls in once a fortnight to update me on how she is and what she is doing. It is lovely to see how far she has come since the beginning of the Foundation Learning Programme.
Philippa has now been accepted onto a Level 2 diploma in Floristry at Askham Bryan College in York and is in a work placement at a local florist. This is a particularly impressive achievement for Philippa as she really lacked confidence when she started at CMS; she had never travelled independently but will be getting the train to York every day for her new course and working with people she has never met before.
Now Philippa has been nominated for the College Outstanding Learner Success Awards 2012 from Kirklees College which is open to all learners within the college, and has been chosen out of all the entrants to win this award. The award is to be held at Dewsbury Town Hall and will involve a champagne reception followed by banquet with presentations and later a disco. It means alot to Philippa and those that know her to see her being recognised for the outstanding person she is. We at CMS are proud of Philippa and wish her all the success in the future.
